Cape Henry Lighthouse

Standing near the Jamestown settlers' first landing site, the Cape Henry Lighthouse is one of Virginia's most iconic historical attractions. Built to guide maritime commerce at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, this famous structure is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the U.S. It's also a great place to enjoy spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, while getting an unforgettable glimpse at America's storied past.

  • When was the lighthouse built?

    Long important for ocean-going shipping traffic in the Chesapeake Bay, Cape Henry Lighthouse was authorized by George Washington and the U.S. government in 1792. Since that time, it's undergone several renovations, while maintaining the bulk of its original architecture.
  • How large is the structure?

    16 feet at its top and 26 feet in diameter at its base, the Cape Henry Lighthouse reaches approximately 90 feet in height. It also features an observation platform, which provides stunning views of the surrounding ocean and landscape.
